Senior Gary Johnson scored a career-high 29 points and UCF mounted a furious second half rally, but it was not enough as the Golden Knights fell to Connecticut, 77-71, in first round action at the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass.

UCF Claims Second Consecutive A-Sun Title

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Senior Gary Johnson scored a game-high 19 points as the UCF men's basketball team defeated top-seeded Gardner-Webb, 63-54, to claim the 2005 Atlantic Sun Championship crown on Saturday afternoon at the Curb Event Center. Johnson was selected to the All Tournament Team and was the Tournament MVP.

Gary Johnson Named to A-Sun All-Conference Second Team

MACON, Ga. - The UCF men's basketball team was well represented when the Atlantic Sun announced its all-conference squads on Tuesday, as senior Gary Johnson and sophomore Josh Peppers were both named to the second team. The Golden Knights have had at least one all-conference selection in each of the last four years.

Johnson ranks second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.8 points per game. His is shooting 81 percent from the free-throw line, good for second in the A-Sun. The point guard ranks in the top-five in the league in three other statistical categories: steals (2.21 per game), three-point field goal percentage (40.5) and three-point field goals made (2.93 per game). He is also in the league top-10 in assists, dishing out 3.9 an outing.

He garnered the league player of the week award on Nov. 22 after earned MVP honors at the BP Top of the World Classic in Alaska. Johnson led UCF to a 3-0 record at the event, averaging 11.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists.

2003-04: Appeared in 30 games, starting 29 times including all four postseason games ... Logged 902 minutes, second most on squad ... Led UCF in assists and ranked 4th in A-Sun with 122 ... Also finished with 54 thefts, one shy of team best while ranking 7th in A-Sun ... Reached double figures in the scoring column eight times ... Led the Knights in assists in 21 contests and thefts 11 times ... Netted 18 points in his UCF debut against Puerto Rico Mayaguez (11/22) ... Also notched a team-high eight assists and grabbed seven boards in season opener ... Finished with eight points, including two triples, three steals and a rebound vs. the College of Charleston (11/26) ... Dished out a team high seven assists and had four steals vs Navy (12/6) ... Poured in 18 points, including 10 of 18 from the line in a win over Gardner-Webb (12/17) ... Dished out six assists and grabbed three boards in a win over Niagara (12/22) ... Doled out seven assists for the second time and finished with four points vs Tennessee-Martin (12/30) ... Finished with 10 points and six assists in a win over GSU (1/3) ... Scored a season high 24 points and hit 11-of-12 shots at the charity stripe in a win over Belmont (1/19) ... Knocked down 11 points and had a team high five assists, while logging a season high 39 minutes in a win at Troy State (1/23) ... Finished with 11 points, five boards and a team high five assists in a home loss to Troy State (1/31) ... Eight points, with a pair of three's, against Campbell (2/28). Also had five assists.

Prior to UCF: Johnson graduated from Schoolcraft Community College in 2003 where he played for head coach Carlos Briggs ... Helped guide his to team to back-to-back Michigan Community College Athletic Association titles ... Squad posted a 65-3 record during his time at SCC, including a school record 34 consecutive wins ... Lost just one conference game in two seasons (25-1) ... Led the MCCAA in steals (3.06) and assists (6.5) ... Second in the conference in free throw percentage (84.3) and fourth in 3-pt field goal percentage (41.3) ... Team advanced to second round of NJCAA Tournament in his final year.
